After obtaining his M Sc in plant breeding and genetics from Nanjing Agricultural University (NAU), where he was also awarded the PhD, Dr. Jiang started his career as a plant breeder. His work in China focused on wheat improvement and related research, such as characterization of target traits and breeding methodology. He also taught plant breeding courses at NAU. During 1997-1998, he performed a six-month research on the leaf rust of barley at Wageningen University in the Netherlands. In 1999, as a visiting scholar and research associate, Dr. Jiang joined the wheat breeding program at Michigan State University, USA. His main responsibilities were development of new varieties resistant to the disease Fusarium head blight and QTL analysis of the resistance.

During his twenty-year professional career, Dr. Jiang developed and released more than ten elite germplasms and/or new varieties, five of which were registered in the USA. He also authored and co-authored approximately 40 publications in peer-reviewed journals and more than 20 articles in monographs, books and proceedings. He was awarded several national prizes/awards by the Chinese governments for his achievements and contributions.

In 2007, Dr. Jiang joined the United Genetics Seeds Company to take over the breeding activities of melon and at interim the watermelon program also.
